About White Sulphur Springs

White Sulphur Springs is a small southern town located in the southeastern region known as the New River/Greenbrier Valley. Like most of West Virginia, the region is mountainous, with rivers and streams that together embrace towns nestled in the valleys that have witnessed history from the earliest days of the American frontier. As of the 2010 census, the population was 2,444.

White Sulphur Springs is home of the world renowned Greenbrier Resort and Spa that has catered to presidents and kings and housed the now-decommissioned Congressional Bunker. (An emergency shelter for Congress during the Cold War era.) The actual spring the town is named for has long been known for its curative powers. White Sulphur Springs is also home of the Greenbrier Classic PGA Golf Tournament, Greenbrier Tennis Classic, the Greenbrier Sporting Club, and home of the soon to be Greenbrier Medical Institute.

Take a stroll down main street of this small town and you will see many historical buildings, shops and places to eat and talk with some of the locals. Like the rest of Greenbrier County, White Sulphur Springs has a low crime rate. For the golf enthusiasts, there is plenty of golf in White Suphur Springs.

Besides the Greenbrier Resort, another great place to stay while in White Sulphur Springs is the James Wylie House Bed and Breakfast located only a mile from the Greenbrier. The B&B is a 3-story Georgian Colonial built in 1819 with hand-made brick. Stay in the main house or the cozy, one bedroom/bath 1794 log cabin that has been fully restored. This historic B&B will take you back in time to the old South, especially when you enjoy a gourmet breakfast on the large front porch. 

White Sulphur Springs is within an easy day’s drive from one third of the U.S. population and therefore has a steady flow of weekenders from several nearby metropolitan areas and surrounding states, including the nation’s capital of Washington, D.C. You can also take the train… the White Sulphur Springs Amtrak Station has its own Christmas gift shop. The station’s peppermint-striped paint job makes it unique among other Amtrak stations. The Amtrak’s Cardinal line offers unforgettable views of the Southeast’s stunning natural beauty. You’ll see gently rolling horse country, the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains, the Shenandoah Valley, and the wild white-water rivers of West Virginia as they can only be seen by train.
