Take advantage of all that nearby Moncove Lake State Park has to offer...
Overview:
A peaceful 250-acre park with a 500-acre wildlife management area, Moncove Lake State Park was established in 1960, following the damming of Devil Creek in eastern Monroe County, and is a favorite setting for outdoor gatherings, camping and water recreation. The park has excellent fishing opportunities and offers seasonal rowboat, kayak, and paddleboat rentals. Its proximity to Peter's Mountain and the ridge-and-valley section of the Appalachian Mountains make Moncove Lake a birding hot spot - more than 160 species can be seen in the area. It sits underneath the flyway of the fall eastern hawk migration. Power boats on Moncove Lake are limited to 5 horsepower.
Features:
- Moncove Lake
- Outdoor swimming pool
- Picnic area
- Hunting (in nearby Wildlife Management Area)
- Fishing
- Boating

- Bird watching
Activities:
Swimming:
Jump in the swimming pool at Moncove Lake State Park for a quick cool down! The pool is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and includes a wading/baby pool, bathhouse, and a snack bar. Moncove Lake State Park swimming pool will reopen on Memorial Day Weekend 2024.
Boating:
Spend a day on the lake here for breathtaking memories. Rowboats, kayaks, and paddle boats may be rented, and personal flotation devices are provided. Visitors are welcome to bring their own boats if they meet all state regulations and use less than a 5 hp gasoline motor. A boat ramp is available, and guests may dry dock their boats near the boat launch.
Fishing:
An angler's paradise! Moncove Lake is 144 acres with excellent fishing opportunities for largemouth bass, bluegill, trout, catfish, walleye, and yellow perch. A West Virginia fishing license is required, which you can purchase online.
Geocaching:
Interested in going on a scavenger hunt? Grab your smartphone with GPS and hit the trails for this technological scavenger hunt. Find the 4 caches sites hidden around Moncove Lake.
Hiking:
There are five hiking trails in the park for you to enjoy, most of which are relatively short, with the longest being around 2 miles. Hikers looking for a longer trek, check the nearby Allegheny Trail on Peter's Mountain, which runs the length of the state, the southern terminus of which connects to the Appalachian Trail. While hiking in the area, be on the lookout for wildlife - whitetail deer, turkey, fox, squirrels, chipmunks, beavers, and more!
