One of Lewisburg's architectural gems, this 3-story home on one acre has been completely updated, preserving its historic features while adapting it for contemporary living. Built 135 years ago as a boarding school for girls, the home has high ceilings, arched windows, central chimneys and attractive hardwood floors, enhanced with a spacious kitchen, a master suite and state-of-the-art bathrooms.
A grand home in every sense, this 4-bedroom, 2½-bath residence has over 5000 square feet of living space on two levels, plus a large unfinished third floor and a basement with its original brick and stone work.
The home's stately brick façade overlooks Lee Street. A brick sidewalk and brick-and-slate steps climb to an elevated front porch offering an ideal spot for a porch swing and rockers and a commanding view of the neighborhood. A comfortable porch swing conveys with the home.
The entrance hall provides a first look at the 10-foot ceilings, arched doorways and windows, and original hardwood floors. To the left, through an arched doorway, the living room features a wood-burning fireplace, a ceiling fan, crown molding and 9-foot windows facing the street. The living room adjoins the dining room, facilitating the flow for entertaining. To the right of the entrance hall, though another arched doorway, the family/TV room also has a fireplace, a ceiling fan, crown molding, and 9-foot windows facing the street. A deep alcove with three windows facing the side yard adds interest to this space.
Continuing along the entry hall, there is a formal dining room on the left and an office/study on the right. The dining room has especially attractive window treatments, which, like all the treatments, convey with the home. A large chandelier and a fireplace enhance the room. The study has a fireplace, bookshelves on three walls, and a storage closet. A half-bath accessed in this room has a tile floor and a vanity with a granite counter. One wall is brick, reflecting the fact that it was once an exterior wall before the home's renovation and enlargement.
The kitchen is in the rear of the home and has its own covered outside entrance. The kitchen has a beamed ceiling with recessed lighting, wood flooring, Corian counters, a double porcelain sink with disposal, two pantry closets, and windows with plantation shutters. Appliances include a Samsung refrigerator-freezer, a Whirlpool electric range, a Whirlpool microwave oven, and a Kitchen Aid dishwasher. A GE washer and dryer are concealed in a nearby laundry area.
Just behind the kitchen, what was once a garage has been converted into an insulated workout studio with recessed lighting, accessible from the kitchen or from outside. Behind this building, what looks like a greenhouse actually houses an endless pool. The greenhouse conveys but the pool doesn't. Just beyond this is a 20x25-foot storage building that has lighting and electrical outlets and can function as either a storage unit or a workshop.
The entire residence has been rewired. There is wi-fi throughout, and many rooms feature USB ports in the electrical outlets. Radiators have been concealed with covers that add subtle design elements and provide protection from hot pipes.
A stairway with the original hand-carved newels, balusters and handrails leads to the home's second and third levels. There are four bedrooms and two full baths on the second level, which has 9-foot ceilings.
The master suite has a hardwood floor. What looks like a reading nook leads to a large walk-in closet with wall-to-wall carpeting and a built-in organizing system that gives every piece of clothing a place to call home. The en suite bath has a heated tile floor, a walk-in shower with two showerheads and decorative tile work, and a vanity with a granite counter.
A separate HVAC system supplies the master suite, helping in humid summers and colder winters without having to heat or cool the entire home.
Bedroom 2 has a fireplace. Bedroom 3 has a fireplace and four arched windows. Bedroom 4 has cabinetry, a built-in bookcase, a ceiling fan and four arched windows.
A decadent 14x14 bathroom accessed from the hallway serves the bedrooms. This gorgeous space has a jetted soaking tub, a glass-and-tile shower with a built-in bench, a double vanity with a granite counter, and recessed lighting. Creative design and color elements come together in spectacular fashion to make this far more than an average bathroom.
The home's unfinished third level features peaked windows, which are visible outside as part of the mansard roof. While the third floor hasn't been used in recent years, it offers plenty of space that could be repurposed for bedrooms or studio projects. Two of the four rooms on this level have fireplaces.
The home's basement evokes earlier times. The stone and brick foundation is visible, and several rooms have brick floors. There are two spaces where it's not hard to envision servants in the distant past living and cooking their meals. Today the basement is interesting to visit, but devoted to utilities and storage. There is plenty of space for a wine cellar, and the basement's "look" and constant temperature would readily lend it to this use.
Magnificent old growth trees and mature landscaping surround the home, and the yard is deep and level. There is a stone patio with a retaining wall, incorporating what was once a brick icehouse in its design. There is extensive outdoor lighting, and the driveway was recently repaved.
Shopping, fine dining and live music and theatre are practically around the corner in downtown Lewisburg. This community of 4000 serves as the commercial hub for the region. Quaint, artsy and picturesque, Lewisburg has been called the ideal small town. The West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine and Robert C. Byrd Clinic are within easy walking distance of the home.
Attractions in the area include the 11,000-acre Greenbrier resort, the annual State Fair of West Virginia, the Greenbrier River, and the 75-mile long hiking and biking trail that parallels it. Snowshoe Mountain Ski Resort, the largest winter sports complex in the eastern United States, is a 1½-hour drive away in nearby Pocahontas County.
This grand home is one-of-a-kind in the Greenbrier Valley. Featured on historic tours it's undeniably a showplace, but a very comfortable, livable one.
