This colorful, tastefully decorated 4-bedroom home in Lewisburg's historic district features a sunken family room, sun porch, patio, and beautifully landscaped private yard.
This 2-story stucco home remodeled by Tamarack architect Clint Bryan uses skylights and glass expanses to create a bright, cheerful interior with views of the landscaped yard, bordered by evergreens and rhododendrons. The spacious living room opens onto a brick patio, creating a flow for entertaining. Features include a sun porch, wet bar, office, library and large main-level master suite.
A brick walkway leads from the parking area to the front entry. Gray stucco, black shutters and lanterns give the exterior an elegant look, with clean lines and symmetrical proportions. The home's classic, conservative exterior belies its colorful, sunlit interior, where interesting spaces flow creatively and glass walls are used to bring the outdoors inside.
The front entry opens into the living room, where the focal point is a gas log fireplace with a decorative wood mantel. The living room has wall-to-wall carpeting, crown molding, a built-in bookcase and four windows.
The living room flows into the carpeted dining room, which enjoys a view of rhododendrons in the side yard. Reportedly the oldest and largest stand of rhododendrons in Lewisburg, the flowers create a spectacular view in the late spring and early summer. The dining room opens to a sun porch, which has a vaulted ceiling and tile floor and exits to the brick patio.
The kitchen has white cabinetry, Corian counters, a work island, a skylight, and a large window overlooking the back yard. Appliances include a Jenn-Air countertop gas range, a Kitchen Aid side-by-side refrigerator-freezer, two Kitchen Aid wall ovens, a Kitchen Aid dishwasher and a GE microwave. The double sink includes a garbage disposal and a hot water dispenser that provides instant boiling water.
Adjacent to the kitchen, an informal dining area and wet bar set off by a Chinese Chippendale railing overlooks the sunken family room. This expansive room has a brick fireplace with a wood mantel. The fireplace is currently configured with gas logs operated by remote control, but it can be readily converted to burn wood. The family room is carpeted, and one wall is lined with built-in seating with storage. Glass walls provide a view of the back yard and open onto the patio.
This level also includes the spacious multi-room master suite. Adjacent to the carpeted bedroom are a sitting room/library with built-in shelves and a private corner office with a built-in desk with a Corian top. The windows in these areas have California shutters.
The master bath includes two vanities with Corian counters and integrated sinks, connected by a sitting vanity/makeup table. The walk-in tiled shower has a glass door, a large tiled seat and is handicapped accessible.
Also on the main level are a half-bath and a laundry closet with a stackable Frigidaire washer and dryer.
The home's second level includes two carpeted bedrooms and a third partially finished dormer bedroom which could be easily converted for other purposes, like a playroom or craft area. Bedroom 2 has two closets, and Bedroom 3 has a built-in corner desk. The carpeting on this level has hardwood flooring underneath it.
There a one-car garage and a full basement, primarily a utility area.
The professionally landscaped yard utilizes evergreen shrubbery and trees to create a natural privacy fence in the side and back yards. Distant mountains peek through the foliage.
This exceptionally colorful, cheerful and creatively designed home is in one of Lewisburg's most desirable neighborhoods, near the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, and just around the corner from downtown shops, restaurants and entertainment. Built in 1952 by Mr. and Mrs. Henry Matthews. Mr. and Mrs. Munir Yarid purchased the home in 1967 and have owned the home for 50 years.
Often called an ideal small town, Lewisburg has fine dining, boutique shopping, a golf course, an 8-screen cinema and a lively arts scene. Annual events include the State Fair of West Virginia, two food-themed street festivals and a literary festival. The Greenbrier Valley Theatre, West Virginia's official state theatre, offers year-round live performances, and well-known artists appear in concert at Carnegie Hall. In addition to the Osteopathic Medical School, the community is also home to an attractive campus of New River Community and Technical College.
The Greenbrier, 8 miles away in White Sulphur Springs, is one of the world's top luxury resorts. The hotel's inexhaustible offerings include multiple golf courses, a spa, a tennis complex, a casino, over 50 boutique shops and a dozen restaurants. The resort hosts the annual Greenbrier Classic, a PGA tour event, and houses a summer training facility for visiting NFL teams.
The nearby Greenbrier River draws anglers and kayakers, and the 75-mile long Greenbrier River Trail is popular with hikers and bicyclists. Snowshoe Ski Resort, a scenic 90-minute drive to the north, is the largest ski complex in the Mid-Atlantic States, and it has an extensive system of mountain biking trails available in the off-seasons.
