This gracious home has been a picturesque feature on Lewisburg's historic main street for over 120 years. An exceptionally deep wraparound porch and a portico add architectural flair. The large foyer, grand staircase and arched entryways amplify its interior appeal. A 1000-square-foot unfinished attic with angular rooflines offers interesting possibilities for a family room, play space or studio.
Set on a foundation of locally quarried greystone, this 2-story home has gray exterior wood siding and white-trimmed windows and shutters. In 2016 the exterior was repainted and house was reroofed with architectural shingles.
The elevated wraparound porch has a depth of 15 feet, evoking the days when family and friends passed their summer evenings in wicker and rockers on the front porch. The appearance of the greystone foundation is echoed in a small stone terrace level with the porch.
The large entrance hall provides a first glimpse of the home's original oak floors and an eye-catching grand staircase with oak treads and a highly polished railing. The foyer opens into the living room through an arched doorway.
The large living room features a wood-burning fireplace with a decorative mantel. A north-facing bay window overlooks Washington Street, and three other windows face east. The living room has a crystal chandelier, exceptionally attractive crown molding, and a chair rail. An adjacent east-facing sunroom is an inviting place for houseplants to spend the winter and people to enjoy the sunshine year-round. A door leads from this room to the side yard.
A small anteroom with floor-to-ceiling bookcases connects the living room and den. Just off this area is a half-bath with a tile floor. The den is a corner room that has a tile floor and a ceiling fan. Two sides are lined with windows fitted with interior shutters. East-facing windows afford a view of bamboo plants, while south-facing windows overlook a trellis with a Concord grapevine. Built-in cabinets with glass doors provide plenty of storage space.
The kitchen is in the rear of the home, next to the den. The cabinetry is white, with antique pulls and glass doors, and the flooring is vinyl in a black-and-white checkerboard pattern. There is a brass chandelier, and there are recessed ceiling lights. The counters are laminate. The double porcelain sink has an Insinkerator disposal. A Kenmore gas range, refrigerator-freezer and dishwasher convey with the sale.
The kitchen opens onto a sitting porch with colonnades and two ceiling fans. This porch overlooks the back yard.
Adjacent to the kitchen are smaller rooms that serve as a pantry and laundry room. One of these rooms has a small elevator to the second floor.
The dining room has an arched entryway, a brass chandelier, hand-stenciling, and a chair rail. Three large windows face west, and a door opens to the front porch, creating an indoor-outdoor space for entertaining.
In addition to the main staircase in the foyer, there is a carpeted back stairway that also provides access to the home's second level.
Six bedrooms, two full baths and a half-bath are on the second floor. Five of the bedrooms have closets. Bedrooms closets are an unusual feature in homes of this age, when people had fewer clothes and typically used wardrobes. The closets may have been retrofitted over the years, but they blend seamlessly into the interior design.
The master suite has 3 large west-facing windows and a ceiling fan. The master bath has a clawfoot tub, a shower surround and a soapstone counter. Bedroom 2 opens onto an attached south-facing sunporch, which can serve as a private retreat for reading or napping. Bedroom 3 is a corner bedroom with 5 windows. Bedroom 4 has two windows. Bedrooms 3 and 4 share a bath with a clawfoot tub, a porcelain pedestal sink and built-in cabinetry. Bedroom 5 overlooks Washington Street on the northeast corner of the house. Bedroom 6 is the smallest bedroom, with a wardrobe in lieu of a closet. This room also overlooks Washingon Street and could just as easily serve as an office or a nursery. A half-bath is accessed from the landing.
Stairs lead from the second floor to the attic. This large, interesting-looking space is currently unfinished but offers myriad possibilities for creative uses.
A small basement, surrounded by the stone foundation, houses the furnace that heats the home with natural gas.
The large backyard has a parking area and a one-car garage with a storage room. There's plenty of space in the yard to expand or replace this with a larger garage if desired.
The landscaping includes old-growth oak trees, boxwoods, yews, and rhododendrons. Tall privacy hedges completely shield the backyard from neighbors.
Only a few blocks from downtown, this Washington Street home offers ready access to all Lewisburg has to offer: shopping, fine dining, entertainment and a busy year-round schedule of community events like Taste of Our Town, the Lewisburg Chocolate Festival, the Lewisburg Literary Festival, free summer concerts on the Carnegie Hall lawn, and live performances at the Greenbrier Valley Theatre. The world-famous Greenbrier resort is only 8 miles away in White Sulphur Springs, and the State Fair of West Virginia takes place annually in August in nearby Fairlea.
If you like to hike or bike, the Greenbrier River Trail is 4 miles away in Caldwell and runs north for 78 miles. Kayaking and canoeing are popular pastimes in the river. And if you love to ski, Snowshoe Mountain Resort, the largest ski complex in the mid-Atlantic states, is a scenic 1½-hour drive to the north.
An exceptionally attractive home on Lewisburg's fashionable main street, this spacious 4380-square-foot property (possibly 5519-square-feet with the addition of the attic) has character, charm and history.
