Daybreak Farm
1300 Russell Scott Road
Hillsboro, WV 24946
Picture perfect 3-story log home and barn on 23-acre farm in Hillsboro.
A scenic one-mile drive through Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park leads to this 3-story, 5-bedroom, 4-bath custom log home and 23-acre farm in southern Pocahontas County. Beautiful stonework, a matching stone outbuilding and a timber frame barn make this property visually appealing and practical for small farming operations and livestock.
This Hearthstone log home, built in 1991 and recently updated, sits in the middle of a small 23-acre farm, half wooded and half in open fields, at a 3058-foot elevation on Droop Mountain, just south of the farming community of Hillsboro. Easily accessed from Route 219 by a paved road that winds through Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park, the farm is bordered on two sides by the park and surrounded by sugar maples, red and white oaks, cedars and dogwoods.
The well-sited and spacious 3-story home overlooks two pastures and a barn. Stone retaining walls add to its elegance and create a level yard. The large Eastern white pine logs and chinking used in the home's construction give the structure a substantial, classic American look. Metal shakes give the appearance of authentic hand-split wood shingles, but provide a lifetime roofing solution.
A custom-made front door opens into an entry and coat closet. Wide plank butternut flooring is throughout the first floor. Kitchen details include butternut cabinets, soapstone counters, a concealed Sub-Zero refrigerator-freezer, an Aga cast iron propane gas range, and a Kitchenaid dishwasher. A floor-to-ceiling bay window overlooks a stone patio, and a window on the opposite side of the room has a built-in hinged window seat for storage.
The living room, master suite, laundry room, and a half-bath are also on the first level.
Exposed timbers and a large sandstone fireplace with a stone hearth create an atmosphere of warmth in the living room. A built-in cabinet conceals the television. Three double casement Pella windows add plenty of light. A back hallway with a pantry and half-bath connect the living room and kitchen.
The master suite is just beyond this area. The bedroom features a cathedral ceiling and stone fireplace, French doors opening onto the patio, and a bank of picture windows affording distant views of Snowshoe Mountain in the winter. The master bath has a whirlpool bath with a slate tile floor, and a vanity with built-in cabinetry. The walk-in closet also has built-ins.
The laundry room has a slate tile floor, a utility sink, built-in storage cabinets and a Kenmore washer and dryer.
There are two bedrooms, a large landing, and a full bath connecting the bedrooms on the second level. The first bedroom has two closets, a built-in TV cabinet, and a window seat with hinged storage. The second bedroom has a gas (propane) log fireplace, two closets, and a window seat with hinged storage. The bath has a deep soaking tub, a separate shower, built-in shelving and a custom vanity.
The third floor has a bedroom with a cathedral ceiling and another room with a cathedral ceiling and skylight. This room could serve as an office, library, craft area or playroom, and could easily become a fifth bedroom. This floor has a half-bath with a linen closet.
Well-insulated Pella casement windows are used throughout the home. There are many custom touches, including handcrafted wooden door latches and forged iron accents.
The home is heated by a two zone dual fuel system, with propane gas and an electric heat pump providing heat, and the heat pump providing air conditioning. A state of the art water purification system was recently installed, and there are smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
The attractive stone patio is enclosed courtyard-style on three sides by the house and bordered by a small stone retaining wall on the fourth. A few steps away, a quaint stone outbuilding with metal shakes identical to those on the home offers many possibilities: storage, a playhouse, or even an artist's or writer's studio. A second outbuilding also provides storage space.
The large, well-constructed timber frame barn is divided into two parts. One half has a poured concrete floor, four stalls with hayracks for horses, and two small lofts. The other half has a dirt floor and large open area, and two small lofts.
The scenic, gently rolling land has an excellent sledding hill. The farm adjoins the Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park, which commemorates West Virginia's last significant Civil War Battle, the Battle of Droop Mountain on November 6, 1863. The park has hiking trails and picnic tables.
Snowshoe Mountain Resort is about 40 miles north of the farm, or an hour-and-fifteen minute drive. The town of Marlinton is 16 miles, and Lewisburg is 25 miles to the south, or 35 minutes.
