They surveyed 100 homeowners with active security systems, got opinions from top security experts, reviewed the complaint and company history of 38 contenders, collaborated with law enforcement agencies across the country, and tested the buying process for all of their top picks. Here are a few takeaways from their research:

  1.    Brand Reputability Is Key — Home security is a notoriously unstandardized industry. Unexpected costs, confusing contracts, and inconsistent service packages make shopping around and comparing prices a difficult process. Being aware of a brand’s reputation and the level of care they’ve provided customers in the past is a good indicator of future performance.
  2.    The Shopping Experience Isn’t Ideal — Obtaining an accurate quote is harder than it seems! Because shopping for a security system can be an a-la-carte process, it makes sense that generic quotes are not available. Having clear knowledge of what you’re looking for can help smooth the process.
  3.    Coverage Levels Vary — It is important to note, however, that at the very least, all home security systems offer the same basic service, and are typically composed of a control panel, wireless sensors, audible alarm, and a 24/7 professional monitoring service.

What Matters Most?

Ultimately, the Reviews.com team found that the following factors were most important in a home security system:

  •     Public Opinion — Recognizability, popularity, and overall presence can act as an effective deterrent, and ensure that the company will deliver consistent service
  •     Ease of Startup — User-friendliness, transparency, and minimal time required to understand the information presented
  •     Competitive Pricing — After identifying the average price, the researchers penalized any company that scored above that
  •     Technology — Forward-thinking and innovation is a good indicator of continued improvement and quality service
